Benefits of Learning Karate:
Benefits of learning karate and as long as a student has an honest teacher of good character and they learn from the training that is given, then the following is important for the development of a good karate student:
1. Consideration
A student of karate must learn courtesy and respect for their fellow students and teachers. A student who only thinks of themselves and is inconsiderate to others is not worthy of karate training. Generally a considerate and courteous student will be more positive in their outlook.
2. Courtesy
In a dojo (training hall) every member and teacher alike must show courtesy to one another. It is this courtesy that is not, however, limited to just the dojo but should be a part of all karate students nature. Karate is not just a mastery of the skills they are taught but of developing into a good and honest member of society. A courteous person will find it easy to make friends and difficult to make enemies.
3. Discipline
Karate is, especially at the beginning, a very disciplined martial art in the way a student has to bow when entering and leaving the dojo, addressing their teacher by calling them "sensei" and in showing no ill feeling or bad temper whilst practicing their art. It is also in the nature of the training that the karate exponent is disciplined in the skills they are taught as many of the striking techniques taught can be extremely dangerous. Discipline has to be instilled to prevent injury occurring to a training partner in executing these techniques. It is through the disciplined training that a student also learns not to show off or brag of their abilities, qualities that a true martial artist does not have.
4. Health
A karate student will undoubtedly develop, in time, a stronger body and a more positive frame of mind. If a student starts training who was physically weak gradually becomes stronger, braver and more confident then it is quite obvious that in that students mind a great deal would have been accomplished. Co-ordination through the physical training will also be improved especially as some of the karate techniques at first seem quite complicated, but with diligent practice they become much easier. As a student becomes fitter and stronger, concentration levels will improve which has added benefits in School for children, or in the workplace for adults. It is not unknown for successful karate students to be successful in their work.
5. Self Defense
Karate does not need the use of weapons; men and women of any age can apply it and one can protect themselves effectively with little natural strength. Karate as a self defense is without equal. A karate exponent will develop courage and fortitude.
Kenagi Students can train in a number of different Martial Arts under Sensei Brian Redman e.g.
Wado Ryu-Shotokhan-Shito Ryu-Jujitsu-Aikido-Kick Boxing.
Being an open group we welcome all instructors from different styles, all students are welcome to train and mix with us.
Very good friends of ours are:
Sensei Derek Ridgway is the founder of the now worldwide association Kazoku Kai International. As well as teaching in his Hombu dojo, Sensei Ridgway travels across the globe to teach Karate to an ever growing family of Karate-Ka.
Sensei Derek has
trained with Peter Spanton, Roy Partridge, Toru Takamizawa, K. Sakagami, M. Shiomitsu. He also trained with people of the time of other styles such as the late Steve Cattle who was one of Derek’s closest friends. Derek continued his Wado training (which he still does) but he was always looking, searching for something that was when he met his Shito-Ryu Sensei Shihan Keiji Tomiyama who is a master of both the Shito and Goju schools. Over the last 20 years Derek has included more and more of Sensei Tomiyama’s karate into his training programme. In December 2000 Derek passed his 6th Dan. He now teaches either Wado or Shito-Ryu to an ever growing amount of students worldwide, with members throughout Europe, the U.S.A. Canada, India, Bahrain, Nepal, and Venezuela.
Sensei Dave Wilkins, again a very good friend and excellent martial artists Sensei Dave trained under Sensei Taiji Kase. Sensei Taiji Kase was born in Japan on January 9th, 1929. The karate world will miss a truly great karate master as he passed away on November 24th at his home in Paris at the age of 75.Sensei Dave follows in Sensei Kase teachings and runs the Leicester Karate Club (Shotokhan). All Kenagi students are always welcome at his and Dereks Dojo's, they are two of the most friendliest helpful instructors around, and it is a pleasure to know and train with them, Kenagi thanks to you both.
Also Sensei Ken DeHaan of the Aikido Circle Black Belt Academy. It is a great pleasure to train with this man.
Sensei Jason Armstrong Shito-Ryu lived with a karate master in Japan and holds a 5th Dan. He has studied Japanese martial arts since 1983. He has worked at Corporate CEO levels in Japan and understands the Japanese culture well. Sensei Jason has had a good deal of exposure to various 8th degree Shotokan, Shito-ryu and Goju Sensei through actively traveling the world and training within noted dojos in Japan, Okinawa, and Hong Kong. He has competed at international levels in kata and kumite in the USA, Japan and Australia & Asia. Sensei Jasons web site is also worth a good look, loads of very usefull information, katas etc. go to our link page. When he is next in the U.K he hopes to come and see us.
Another man who I have just touched base with is Sensei Bob McCormack, ZenShin Budo Kai, a true master of the Nunchaku.
He is truely an amazing man and has a dojo in SE London, Near to Crystal Palace. We hope to have Sensei Bob down to put on a special course. If you want to know more about this great man go to the links page.
Our students may train and mix with all
clubs and instructors that invite us, we also invite anyone to train with us at anytime no matter what the grade or association.
